The Maine Coon Ragdoll Mix is all the rage!!
Are you looking for information about Main coon Ragdoll Cat mixes and cross breeding?
Ragdoll Maine Coon Mix
The Ragdoll cat is what this website is all about, they are fluffy, floppy and fantastic family pets, and one of the most popular cats breeds in the entire world. They are pretty incredible and have a lot of desirable qualities. The ragdoll was a created breed, and by that we mean that various sessions of breeding other types of cats produced the ragdoll breed.
The Maine Coon is the largest breed of domestic cat in the whole world. They get big, according to wikipedia they can get up to 20 pounds and 16 inches high. Big cats.
The great thing about crossing these two breeds is that you are not worried about birthing. Sometimes with cross-breeding, you can get a mismatch in size and that can be traumatic for the female, think of a chihuahua breeding with a rottweiler. These cats are roughly the same size and that shouldn’t be an issue.
The maine coon is also a natural breed, coming from the US and is native to Maine which is a state in the US.
The Maine Coon Cat
The origin of the maine coon is not crystal clear, but what is known is that short haired and long haired domestic cats began to breed and the maine coon was born, thankfully the maine coon cat retained it’s gorgeous long hair, friendly disposition and superior intelligence.
The original cats from this breed were your typical brown tabby, but after a while, they have begun to incorporate various colour schemes into their breeding. Even with different colours though they have all kept their long flowing hair and flowing tail.
Maine Coons are known for their affection and intelligence. They are very smart, but they are also great pets. Due to their intelligence, they were widely used as pest control cats by the early American settlers to take care of mice and rats. They have great hunting abilities, large muscular bodies and the ability to withstand the cold.
These cats are still used for these activities today, but as society has become more settled these cats have become more domesticated and more of a family pet. Just don’t be surprised if your Maine Coon brings home a captured gift for you.
This will be a significant difference from the Ragdoll, who was primarily bred as a house pet, and shouldn’t even go outside.
Coat Colour and Coat Type
These cats have long, often shaggy, double thick fur coats. The top-coat is waterproof and the undercoat is soft and warm. They were build for the east coast winters.
There are all kinds of different colours in these cats, even points sometimes. They can also have any colour of eye, except blue which the ragdoll must have. So when you are breeding these two kinds together you are going to get a wild variety.
Maine Coons do meow, but often they will also chirp and make other noises. This is likely due to their ancestry in hunting and being able to make different noises. However they can be quite vocal when they want to be.
The Ragdoll Cat
This whole website is all about ragdoll cats. I don’t want to spend too much time here in this article rehashing all of the information. I will put some links here to other articles that we have that you can read. Here and here.
The basic overview is that ragdolls are very docile and floppy. They make great house, and family pets. The ragdoll cat is known for being a larger cat breed and having a high level of intelligence and being quite affectionate. They are also well known for their striking blue eyes and various colour patterns.
From this you can see why mixing the Maine Coon and the Ragdoll would be a great idea. You get an affectionate cat, with a cuddly disposition and the smarts to hunt. It’s a great mix.
Maine Coon vs Ragdoll Health Problems and Issues
Before we get into the mixing of the breeds I also wanted to present a little information if you are trying to decide between the two breeds. obviously up above we have already talked about the main things that are different between the two types of cats, but I also wanted to make you aware of some of the health risks associated with each breed. Just something to watch out for.
In the conversation about a Maine Coon Ragdoll Mix you should definitely discuss the medical issues.
It should be noted that both breeds are considered hardy and healthy as standard. These are just guidelines to watch out for.
Maine Coon Health Problems and Issues
These cats have an average lifespan of around 12-14 years, they are a fairly healthy breed.
Outside of all the normal cat stuff there are 4 main things that you need to watch out for when it comes to this cat breed.
The Maine Coon is more susceptible than other breeds to 4 main conditions. They are hip dysplasia, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
- Hip Dysplasia. Just like in dogs this is when the hip joint develops in the wrong position. The ball and socket of the hip become injured, and it can be a problem with bigger cats, especially if they have an unhealthy lifestyle. This can lead to arthritis and pain while walking or running. Females are more prone to this problem. To help with the problem you can use oils and omega-3.
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). This is a thickening of the heart musclem and leads to a distended ventricle in the heart. It’s not easy to diagnose. It leads to irregular blood flow and oxygen around the body.
- Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) This is a significant issue in humans as well. This generally means that the spinal chord disintigrates and it leads to muschle loss and the rear legs don’t function properly. You can usually notice this in kittens as they age, but may show up a little later.
- Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) This is a degenerative disorder that develops as small cycts in the kidney. It affects kidney function. It does have a spectrum like the SMA from mild to sever, but is not curable.
Ragdoll Health Problems and Issues
Ragdolls suffer from some of the same things that other cat breeds suffer from like kidney issues and urinary tract infrections.
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) – the same issue that affects the Maine Coon above.
- Urinary Tract Issues particularly those affecting the bladder. Good water will help with this but check with your vet if you suspect this is an issue for your cat.
- Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) This affects the upper respiratory area of the cat, and ragdolls can get this.
- Vision and Joint Issues (Feline Mucopolysaccharidosis) – Genetic issues are sometimes found in Ragdolls around their eyes and joints. One of my cats has cataracts and some eye issues.
Both of these cat breeds can be overfed. It is important to watch your can and maintain a healthy weight. Having food available 24-7 may or may not be a proper solution for your cat depending on its metabolism and lifestyle.
Maine Coon Ragdoll Mix Medical Issues
As you can see from above there are a few things that you need to watch out for when it comes to these cats. If you have a mixed breed one of the things to ask is does you cat look more ragdoll or more maine coon? The answer to this will lead you to watch for things more related to the cat they resemble the most. Each kitten from a mix breed will get different genes and traits from their parents.
Are Ragdoll cats bigger than Maine Coons?
No Maine Coons are typically bigger than Ragdoll cats. Usually a Maine Coon will have 3-4 inches in height and length on a ragdoll cat and will also be about 3-5 pounds heavier. Having said that there are some big Ragdolls and some small Main Coons, so this isn’t always the case.
Should I get a Maine Coon or a Ragdoll?
Hopefully, some of the information in this article will help you make that decision. It really comes down to what you are after. The price of each cat is basically the same, and they have a very similar disposition. One difference is that the ragdoll cat doesn’t shed or have dander which may influence your decision. When you mix these two breeds the traits that are passed on are different for each kitten, so you will need to work with your breeder to make that decision.
this article is about the Maine Coon Ragdoll Mix, and you can definitely get a mix or a pure bred.
How big will a Maine Coon cross get?
A Maine Coon can get as big as 20 pounds or even bigger and will stand 16-18 inches high. These cats are the largest domestic cat, and their fluffy long hair will make them look even bigger.
How much is a Maine Coon mix?
Generally speaking you are looking in the 1000-1500 dollar range for a Maine Coon, or a Maine Coon mix. The Ragdoll cat is generally in that range too, sometimes a little less. Mixing the two of them doesn’t really change the price.
